Nagasu  is located in the northern Kumamoto. It covers 19.44 sgar km with scenery of  Mt. shodai in the prefecturalpark on east. The west part of this town is on the eat bank of Ariake-sea. Where you can also view Simabara Peninsula. The neighboring town on the north side is Arao city. It is bordered from Taimei town by Yukusue  River in the south-east part. 

Nagasu  is convenient to access by public transportation services as well as your car. By car, national highway 501 and 389 run from west to the east, and south to north, respectively. JR Kyushu-Kagoshima Main Line runs between north-west and south-east. Ariake ferry service connecting Nagasu Port with Taira port 

 in Nagasaki. This town is pecfectly developed with coexisting both ample nature and  industrial area.

History of Town

Nagasu is the long narrow sandbank facing Ariake-sea. There is important place of fishery. The present vast area of paddy fields was developed by the daimyo of Higoclan , Kiyomasa Kato in 1607 (Keichou 12) and Tunatoshi Hosokawa in 1627 (Kanei 4). Nagasu was settled by combination of old Nagasu and a part of old Kiyosato in 1955 (Showa 30) .

Then, Fukuei which was settled by combination of old Rokuei and old Haraaka villages in 1956 (Showa 31), was combined with Nagasu in 1957 (Showa 32). Finally, it was named as Nagasu.


Location and Geography

Since Nagasu is located in northern Kumamoto, its southwesterm part is surrounded by Ariake Sea and view of Unzen. The neighboring cities on the northern part are Arao City and Omuta City.  On the hill in eastern part, Japanese pear and orange farms are commonly seen. The paddy fields spread from coastline to central area. Tides in Ariake sea occurs with approxim ately 2 km far from the seashore which is beneficial for cultivation of nori (Japanese seaweed) and other coastal fisheries as well.

The bold edge means hope of development.  The composition came from  "na(Na in katakana)" of Nagasu. It shows a plover after the old name of  "Tidori-Ga-Hama (plover seaside)". It was only simply made with  circle and a triangle. So it is easy to draw and to recognize.



In commemoration of the 36th National Arbor Day, Kuroganemochi was established to be the tree of Nagsu which is suitable to the aims of making an active and a graceful culture-industry city. It also corcourages people in buiding their town to become more excellent town.

This tree grows on itself on mountain of southern warm district of Kanto District where it is about 10m in height and resembles holly. Light purple florets bloom and spherical red fruits are borne in spring. Moreover,bart of this tree is used as composition of rubber.






An antirrhinum was selected on the flower of Nagasu ou commemoration of the 36th National Arbor Day. It is a nerbaceous perennial and orriginally comes from the Mediterranean. It concourages people in buiding their town to becomes more excellent  town of active. That is also for raising the town peoples volition of the beauty of their hometown culture-industry town.

Shipbuilding industry

Hitachi Zosen (Ariake works) decided to expand its business here in 1970 and started operation in October 1974. Although the shipbuilding industry was established as the industry of structural recessions in 1978, its company is sending out ships mainly, marine structures and plant facilities before going through several rationalizations exercises. Its company also moved sections of land machinery from Sakurajima works in Osaka and aims at being an overall factory with productivity and competitive edge of the top group in the world.

Aluminum sash industry

Aluminum processing industry is one of the key industry in Nagasu Town along with shipbuilding industry. Kyushu Fujisash expanded its business here in 1969 and Tostem (Ariake works) did in 1976. Now, these company back up the industry of the town with the employees of 1,300 and the value of manufactural article shipment of 40 billions yen or more. Although the main product is the aluminum building material for houses and buildings, unique aluminum products, such as portable shrines, soccer goals, etc. are also manufactured.


Agriculture (Japanese pears)

The agriculture industry in Nagasu Town is classified into urban oriented agricultural area, and the farmers of about 80 percent are part-time farm household. The average area under cultivation is 70 acre. Basic crops are mainly paddy rice, Japanese pear, tomato, Japanese orange, etc. As for agrarian forestry infrastructure, 67 percent of agricultural area (about 391 hectare) is finished. We continue to go ahead with the agrarian forestry infrastructure to foster farmhouses.


Fishery ( nori cultivation)

The fishery industry in Nagasu are nori (Japanese dried seaweed) cultivation, flue fishery, and pole-and-line fishing by boat. The main industry is nori cultivaton Work of bamboo standing for spreading nori nets starts in September. The nori of deep black, grouning with enough light essential nutrients and covers over the sea. This nori, product of Kumamoto, is pickled in grades by the fisheries cooperative association and is shipped to the prefectural association. Then, it is processed into toasted laver and seasoned laver and then shipped all over Japan.


Although the associates of the goldfish culture exceeded 300 persons in the golden age, 27 houses is expanding their business around the world now since the scale of culture became larger. The season of cultivation starts when the sunlight of spring in mid-March has become warm, and spawning and hatching is repeated from the middle of April to July. However, it is started at May in some production area. The season of scooping goldfish starts three months later. You can see dear goldfish which becomes the leading star from place to place where fairs and festivals are held.

Industrial Complex

Nagasu Town was designated as a new industrial area including Nagasu Industry Complex and Meishihama Industry Complex, with more than 100 hectare. It was prepared and was improved in 1974. Twenty-two companies have branched out there. Nagasu Town has been changed from the town of semifarming and semifishing to be industrial area especially the shipbuilding and Aluminum processing industry. We continue to go ahead with the welcome enterprise actively and aim to make the town where the young and old create alively town together.
